American Serenade, launched this past spring, is the sixth of American Cruise Line's modern riverboats, following the debut of American Harmony, American Jazz, American Melody and American Symphony. Visit Gatlinburg, Tennessee which sits just outside the park, nestled in a narrow valley. At the end of an amazing day, indulge the flavors of the South and delight in a delicious beverage as you socialize at the daily cocktail hour. Sometimes Sailing is a cruise-focused website by Dan and Mikkel Woodruff, a couple passionate about cruising. The thing we most liked about that day, which isn’t apparent on the guest website before you sail, is that you can book multiple tours that day because they’re at different times.
Music Cities Cruise
Discover the cities, small towns, along these legendary rivers that echo the sounds of the music that originated there. Enjoy diverse and immersive local excursions, as each day is a new delight through a parade of charming towns that echo a bygone era. Hear about the birthplace of blues and home to the King of Rock-n-Roll, from our onboard expert and local guides, who can provide a genuine back story about the performers who provided the soundtrack of America. Nightly onboard entertainment spotlights the musical flair of this region, as does an unforgettable visit to Nashville’s legendary Grand Ole Opry.
Ship Tour
If you like nature and Native American history, you’ll enjoy this excursion. It’s a little over two hours total, with the two locations between minutes from the ship. The two stops were the Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall (also called “Tom’s Wall,” or “Te-Lah-Nay's Wall”) and the Florence Indian Mound and Museum.

Reflect upon your adventures and the new friends made along the way. On this new itinerary, guests will visit towns throughout the Tennessee Valley as they follow the River’s winding path into the Appalachian Mountains. Yet in the middle of all of this is one of the region's most beloved institutions, Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant. Service is friendly and down-home, and the catfish are piled high on plates in front of our group.
Day 7: Nashville
Passengers visit charming towns throughout the Tennessee Valley as they follow the river’s winding path into the Appalachian Mountains. Ports include Decatur and Florence, Alabama; Savannah, Tennessee; and Paducah, Kentucky. The itinerary also takes in the Cumberland River, exploring Lake Barkley and the Land Between the Lakes. It is bathed in stereotypes, both accurate and inaccurate, oft-overshadowed by its bloody Civil War history and an uncomfortable relationship with slavery that endures to this day. Running from Nashville to Chattanooga (or reverse), it calls on Paducah, Kentucky; Savannah, Tennessee; Florence, Alabama; and Decatur, Alabama. Paducah is known for its antiques and quilting, while Savannah is famed for its Civil War battle sites and its proliferation of catfish.
Port vs Starboard: Cruise Ship Left and Right Sides
We were sad that most shops were closed on Monday – the day we were there – but happy to be delightfully surprised by the museum. The museum walks you through the history of the Native Americans there with artifacts like arrowheads, jewelry, and pottery. It has a bit of the river’s Civil War history, then transitions into post-war river uses, like when steamboats transported people and goods across, up and down the river. Afterward, we visited the Florence Indian Mound and Museum, where we learned more about the local Native American history, followed by a walk through the small but mighty museum there.
Grand Ohio River Cruise
Her nature-inspired quilting exhibits were incredible, emulating cross-cut tree trunks, sunflowers, and sea creatures. We weren’t docked there beyond a few hours during the afternoon but it made such a lasting impact on us. We visited Corinth and the NPS Visitor Center then went to Hagy’s Catfish Hotel for lunch. American Cruise Lines guests had a private room for lunch and the waitresses were incredibly efficient. We opted for the pre-cruise hotel overnight the day before the cruise began.
The Mississippi River is navigable from New Orleans, Louisiana to the Twin Cities of Minnesota, and forms a maritime corridor through the U.S. heartland. See important Civil War sights and other riverside attractions during shore tours that are included in the price of your vacation. And back on board, enjoy upscale accommodations, delicious cuisine, wine and beer with dinner, lively entertainment and intriguing lectures, all covered in the rate. Some cruises that sail the Tennessee River also spend time on the Mississippi River. Welcome to Memphis, a historic city which rises picturesquely up the hillside from the river, adorned with grand oak trees, lush parks, and historic sites that commemorate everything from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement.
You can sign up for the excursions online between days before your cruise. Or, if you want to wait, you can sign up onboard as long as there is still room for that particular excursion. We especially loved the small lounges on Decks 2, 3, and 4 and the Sky Lounge on Deck 4. We sat on the balcony many times to enjoy the Tennessee River cruise scenery. We absolutely loved our relaxing cruise experience on the Tennessee River, which was more beautiful than we could have imagined. If you want an experience on a beautiful ship with a reputable cruise line in the USA with well-organized tours, this is the best choice. While most European river cruise ships have elevators, they don't usually have a dedicated handicapped-accessible room. We even paled around with a man we really adore and his wife during the cruise, who was in an electric-operated wheelchair. The hotel, which was a Double Tree, was in a great location and easy to find. The rooms were clean and comfy, and the buses to the ship the next day were well organized.
After a day of exploring, settle into your pre-cruise hotel and relax. Settle into your hotel explore this city at your leisure. From the legendary Grand Ole Opry to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville is the official headquarters of country music. Consider touring The Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson.
